How long have you been playing Electronic Dance music, what made you enter the scene?

Its been 15 yrs since I started to dj and been nearly a decade that I ventured in to dance music while I was studying my music production in London. The whole idea of spreading the music and controlling people emotions on the dance floor got me hooked.

What was the first party you ever played at?

Ahhh!!!! This is a tough one, need to roll back 15 yrs for that, but I think my first major show was in TURNMILLS in london in 2000, but my first gig was in 1998 for some corporate house here in Delhi.

Tell us about the birth of  ET (Electronic Tatva), which are some of the other genres of EDM that you are working with?

My project ET is now dormant, I am now producing and performing under the name AUDIOGRAMME, the sounds are mainly Progressive with Tech elements and rolling basses, I love Techno music so I keep experimenting with that in my sets/studio quite a bit.

What would you call your style of music?

Its purely Tech-Trance/ Progressive.

What are the music items you cannot live without?

My headphone and my laptop.

How do you feel, this being your second time playing at Universal Religion, what can we expect from your set?

Its an ecstatic feeling to be in the valley once again, I have done many festivals in the mountain region but Universal Religion offers a more organized and professional approach and yes the magic factor is the top most, if u know what I mean. The energies are mutual and the location is just perfect. This time one can expect a very uplifting set, comprising of live syntheses and mainly my own productions which is a hybrid of Tech and Trance.

What tip would you give a first timer who is coming to Universal Religion?

Just be safe and don’t abuse drugs, keep the area clean and green while you have one of the best experiences of life here in Universal Religion, Nepal. Its nature meeting music, respect both.

One festival essential you should never leave home without ..

A comfortable pair of shoes or slippers, rest everything else will be helped with at the festival site itself..that doesn’t mean you don’t wear your clothes.

Any production plans for this year, what plans for new releases?

Yes, lot of stuff is coming out and is already out this year on GTA (Global Techno Alliance Recs) my new single “Collegamento” is already zooming on Beatport, its a Techno track, next ep “DREAMING” is slated to release somewhere in mid June. Its a compilation of 3 original Progressive Trance tunes followed by my debut album by the end of this year.

The wildest place/venue/club/party you have played at so far.

It has to be club FABRIC in London in 2002, and this year’s Sunburn was equally exciting too, as it was my debut set at the festival.

Where else can we expect to see ‘AUDIOGRAMME’ playing in 2012?

This year seems promising as I am in talks with IBOGA RECS, UNIVERSAL DANCE RECORDS for my releases, once that is finalized I am hoping to travel a lot more in Europe, apart from that domestic gigs in India are up.

UNIVERSAL RELIGION EXCLUSIVE: Know Your Artists “KEROSENE CLUB/FLIPKNOT/FIBRE STOMP”

As a lead up to the Universal Religion 2012 Edition, we are going to be releasing exclusive interviews with your favorite artists. Some of them you may have seen before, some you shall have the joy of catching this April in Nepal ! This is simply a space to “Know Your Artist”, the person behind the music and the soul behind the sound.

A premier psychedelic export from India, he’s the one DJ who can make you dance through all hours of day and night with his own original sounds. Welcoming him back for his second edition at Universal Religion, heres celebrating the man behind the mammoth dance floor projects of Kerosene Club, Flipknot, Fibre Stomp, Spiritual Gangsta and Brianoid, we bring you Brian Fernandes ...

Image

Hello Brian, a stalwart in the Psychedelic arena how did it all start?

Greetings and thanks to those  who gonna spend the next precious 10 mins (maybe 5 if u are a fast reader) of their life reading this Q&A..back to the Q, it started almost 30 yrs back where my family tree was heavily in music and totally updated with vinyl’s, cassettes of all genres of music being blasted on full volume specially on Saturdays and Sundays. So you can say I have listened to almost  everything from 50’s to 2000 (p.s same with comics, novels etc I am a Collector). I had the biggest collection of bootlegged stuff as well releases from all over. So the good tunes were already occupying headspace slowly, then tru school and college where music experimentation lead to the infamous ‘Indian Metal’ era of the early 90’s, when things got heavier and wicked. Amazing underground rock shows and festivals were similar to the parties and fests we have now. Then further musical experimentation lead to the Psychedelic music encounters where else, but the beaches of Goa and metal took a backseat.

What made you take up Djing and producing, did being musical come naturally?

Music is just like one’s mother tongue language which we never learn but we get it just through years of communication and yes I learnt the guitar when in college, but I feel I’m too much of a control freak so never wanted to form a full time band, though I tried but I knew it was not the thing for me..so djing and producing was perfect for me. One man Army.

You have 4 different sides…was Kerosene Club the beginning and can you explain how it is different to show-casing Flipknot?

Make it 5, you forgot ‘Brianoid’. Well, the beginning came through college parties and at socials  where I started putting in ‘different’ music from the usual hits on unsuspecting dance victims. Then I  started playing full time Psytrance  music as dj 26brian for at least 4-5 yrs…then I got bored playing other producer tunes and decided to take matters into my hands.

I helped set up India’s first party promoters and Psy label Paradiso Recs in 2002 and we were one track hort less so I decided let’s try make one, it  took 2 months to make it and I think I’m the only artist in the world to release the first track ever produced, so Kerosene club was born then. Kerosene Club is bit on the heavier side of music. I believe music is like food… some like spicy ,some like non spicy etc  and I just like to  cook different aural dishes, Flipknot is on the more deeper, organic soundscape, more ‘vegetarian’ music as I have nicknamed it.

Can you tell your fans a bit about Temple Twister Records, what’s news and your role in it?

I formed Temple Twister Records in 2005, we just released swiss producer Drumatik’s latest album  and now a compilation v.a mystic mutants is almost ready. Temple Twister Recs is the only Indian label consistently churning out releases since then. My role in it is everything from conceptualisation to getting it in stores.

Are you happy with the Psychedelic Trance direction in India & Nepal?

Psychedelic Trance has become a movement in India and Nepal, whatever said it still pulls majority listeners let it be Prog, Full on or Forest/ Hitech Psy’, even though the demonisation of the genre by the media and governing policies. Other genres have been also embracing  the Psy genre into their own cause at the end Psytrance music is beyond usual “having a good time “music .

How did your association with Digital Om begin?

Digital Om had booked me for one of the earlier 2009 editions of Universal Religion, but I couldn’t make it for some reason, then I played for some of their gigs in India and we worked together on some tours and last year’s festival edition. Full Respect to them for going strong even when the scene here was taken apart by naive gossip mongrels a.k.a media

Give us your take on Universal Religion, it looks massive this 2012 edition?

Universal religion is one of the few camp-out festivals in Asia  which we lack in India. It’s a different feeling to live out in the nature and the whole festival becomes like a small town for few days. Universal Religion is all about the music, I doubt they even rent a mic …so it’s bound to get massive and to pull off a event like that without sponsors, hats off to them.

Does being a Dj/ Producer cum records label head all rolled in to one, giving you joy?

The whole thought of creating something which never existed  and giving it a direction and an identity gives me immense joy. Also I teach Edm production and promote new talent  and also manage few artists under my artist management company-

Melting galaxy I run 5 record labels churning out music in other genres too. Technology has helped me to a great extent in all of these ventures, maybe 20 yrs back I couldnt manage to do  all this.

Digital Distortion Records is it going the way you’d like it to, some fantastic artists under the label?

Digital Distortion Recs has always been a platform for artists mostly talented new artists to showcase their exciting creations, some of the big names have released their first ever tracks on these labels. Right now Whiptongue and Human resource from Denmark, Spinal Fusion and of course Fibre Stomp are some smashing artists to look out for .

Parvati Records is massive in the Psychedelic world; a particular sound it represents you can describe?

Parvati Records is the only Psychedelic label to have celebrated 12 yrs of existence and constant quality  releases. Most of the labels fizzed out after the internet mp3 wave (pun intented)  and exist only as ghost labels without actually releasing anything. Look at the quality of music Parvati Recs  have in their discography. Parvati Recs sound is more organic ,groovy and very Psychedelic compared to the usual Psychedelic sound..they in fact developed a new genre in Psychedelic music ‘Forest Music’.

What’s coming up releases and gig wise in 2012?

Releases wise a lot and I mean a lot, Kerosene clubs, Flipknots, Fibre stomps, my chill and DnB project – Spiritual Gangsta album and yes Brianoid (Techno) 2nd ep. The gigs in India and around are always happening. I took a break from international touring from Jan to March just to finish these projects, now they are all almost  done, so from May till Sept there is Germany, Spain, Romania, Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Australia etc.

After Universal Religion where do you go?

To my bedroom, I am sure will need a lot of sleep after Universal Religion.

What’s your current favorite tune?

In Psy Atriohm- Dream Converter and one Zen Mechanics tune the name I cannot recollect at the moment, in DnB – Atom Middle and in Chill this tune of Ajja with Cosmosis jam sessions which they haven’t named yet.

What made you start off ‘Spiritual Gangsta’, your down tempo project. Is it something you’ve always wanted to do?

Its not only downtempo project but also Chill DrumnBass, I hadn’t planned to start, a friend from Japan needed an intro to his Cd like an Ambient piece, so started writing it and in the end it turned to be a full complete track which he also released. Then I went on a producing spree and wrote like 8 tunes in 2 months, mostly while touring at airports, hotel rooms right now I am producing more liquid DnB. I played this project for first time in Brazil at Universo Parallelo in Dec which was well received, after that I have been experimenting at local gigs usually opening parties with this project, I am looking forward to Universal Religion and Full Moon Chill out stage in Germany  to showcase this stuff.

Who are your favorite artists in the scene?

Favs no one in Psy, but in other forms Naibu, June Miller, Androcell, Peak Collective etc.

Given a choice of how to spend your eve, would you prefer a candle light dinner or playing up a storm behind the console?

First playing up a storm behind the console and then a candle light dinner..hmmm ok forget the candle light dinner, I’ll go back to kick up another monster storm.

Anything you would like to share with your numerous followers, to keep up with you this year?

Just keep your ears and mind open…and be careful of what you wish for you might just get it…

Is it safe to say that you would like this genre to gain more commercial popularity?

Yes, but till listeners don’t experience it they wont know about it..everyone is partly blinded by music being enforced down their throats with well-marketed garbage, so they wont even know what different kind of music and styles exists unless they are showcased.

Can you sum yourself up as an artist in one word?

Storyteller

Your EP released with Digital Om- ‘Fluff Mafia’, as Fibre Stomp.. can u speak something more about this project?

Fibre stomp is more full-on style with melodies, emotions, daytime vibe the feedback has been good, already working on the next one.

You are the most globally known artist from India in the Psychedelic scene, what do you think of the upcoming generation of producers, do you think it is about time India went international in a big way on the artist/dj front?

Some of my students are already on their way there the future is bright for India. I’m also looking forward but how long can’t tell, the level of competition and others factors is just rising. Buck up, homies.

Your favourite party/festival that you have played in the past and why?

Too many, but Boom festival was nice, Sol festival and Universal Religion last year was banging, Japan and Brazil are always wow..so yes my last party is always my favorite till the next one happens.

UNIVERSAL RELIGION EXCLUSIVE: Know Your Artists “TRISTAN”

As a lead up to the Universal Religion 2012 Edition, we are going to be releasing exclusive interviews with your favorite artists. Some of them you may have seen before, some you shall have the joy of catching this April in Nepal ! This is simply a space to “Know Your Artist”, the person behind the music and the soul behind the sound.

A stalwart in the scene, someone whose powerful sounds and ‘always smiling’ energy has made you move, from the beaches in Goa to massive psychedelic dance floors around the world, we bring you our favorite “big friendly giant” of psy, TRISTAN COOKE !!!!

Image

Tristan your name carries huge weight; what made you take up Psychedelic?

Thank you! I have been Djing for a few years before I went on a trip to India in 1993, where I discovered Goa Trance parties I and never looked back…

Two decades and still blasting the floors all around the globe, musically what makes you dig this madness?

What’s not to love??? (apart from the massive amount of time in airports) Thankfully I still absolutely love what I do:it still presents a challenge and provides my family and I with an amazing way of life. Wouldn’t swap it for anything!!

Universal Religion 2012 Nepal is going to be a first, what do you, already know of this musical giant?

I’ve heard it’s amazing, but I tend not to listen too much to hearsay… I just go
to places and make up my own mind. but I’m  looking forward to a festival in Nepal… it’s a first for me, and very excited about it.

Would you say the UK is a fertile ground for this sound, as you originate from there?

London in particular has a huge influence on the Trance scene; there are so many great producers, party people and killer vibes there, that’s why I base myself there for most of the year when I’m not in Goa.

Having collaborated with several producers/ djs in the past, can your fans expect a solo album or track release in 2012?

Yes.. now I’ve wrapped up the Killerwatts album ‘Blow your Mind’, I’m free to get on with my own material in 2012.

What’s your favorite party venue in the world?

Phew… there’s almost too many to mention, the beach of Universo Parallelo, the foot of mount fuji in japan, samothraki island, shiva valley on south anjuna beach, the inspiral cafe in camden; all for different reasons, but the most important factor at any party is the vibe and that’s created by the people on the dance floor
What fun things do you get up to when you’re not playing?

I’ve had an amazing season in Goa playing frisbee, body-surfing, watching the sunset, writing tunes, playing with my daughter, hanging out with crazy beautiful freaks… you get the picture!

You have a fresh and red hot vibe behind the decks, describe yourself in 5 words.

ROCKING WITH THE PARTY PEOPLE!

How did you come across Digital Om, tell us the story?

Like all good relationships we just found each other!

Are you still in association with Twisted Records, how does it feel to be the one steering Nano Records to much glory?

I am still friends with Simon Posford and the Twisted gang, but we no longer work together. Nano has been amazing for me and we have gone from strength to strength, and the label deserves all the credit it gets

Tell us about your project with Avalon ”KillaWatts”, how is that going?

Actually spelled ‘KILLERWATTS’, it’s a full on psychedelic, funky, uplifting, blasterizer of an album; and the live sets have been really kicking ass

How do you juggle production and gigs?

Pretty much means producing during the week and gigging at weekends; Trance is a full time occupation

Any hobbies you like to pursue?

I have been practicing Japanese kick boxing and have competed internationally for the last 10 years or so….

Do you play any musical instruments?

Originally I played the drums as a teenager (till i discovered drum machines and dance music) now I play guitar, and recently bought a piano for my birthday, so I’m enjoying learning that.

Any musical ambitions?

Keep taking people on Psychedelic journeys.

What’s your favorite food and party poison?

I’d have to say breakfast cereal as I eat it every morning, and party poison? Well, anything that expands my mind and brings me closer to the universal consciousness that is one LOVE!!

What can your fans expect from your set at Universal Religion 2012 edition?

Fat tunes and big smiles– I can’t wait!!

UNIVERSAL RELIGION EXCLUSIVE: Know Your Artists “JANUX”

As a lead up to the Universal Religion 2012 Edition, we are going to be releasing exclusive interviews with your favorite artists. Some of them you may have seen before, some you shall have the joy of catching this April in Nepal ! This is simply a space to “Know Your Artist”, the person behind the music and the soul behind the sound.

For someone who has destroyed dance floors regularly in India, plus this being his fourth edition at the Universal Religion stage in 2012, we are all looking forward to another stomping set from Jehan Johar. Read on to know more …

Being a Goa baby, tell us a little bit about your early impressions of the Goa scene and it’s impact on your music..

Wow.  Total journey.  Everyone had a genuinely creative life-style.
Theatre performances on the beach, enchanting pot-luck dinners, motor-bike caravans, wind surfing clubs, late night poker tournaments that looked like something out of Pirates of the Caribbean, the flea market was just two rows in those days 😛 The early parties were amazing.  Small, but everything was fresh and full of life.

Every person at every party looked like a character out of some fantasy.  Every individual was so powerful. It’s like each person represented their own constellation, their own planet. So much diversity, so many different types of people from all over the world, but all together. I was a 7 year old kid at the first few parties I saw! The parties were different those days, everyone knew each other, it was safe for kids to be around, most of the parties would be in front of someone’s beach house. I would fall asleep on the porch at night, tucked away safely, while my parents and their friends partied away and I would always wake up at sunrise and watch the beautiful madness. There were darker elements too even at that time, but even they were fresh.

As the music evolved and changed from season to season, so did the parties and the vibe.  I got exposed to so much from such a young age that i can’t draw a line between me and the music. It’s like trying to draw a line between thought and language. What I did experience and learn from all this, is the importance of being flexible to a situation, the music should be the thought of the party, play it according to situation.

What was the first party you ever played at?

Well I’d like to tell of the first 3 parties if that’s ok 🙂 1999- It was a small outdoor private party in Goa. In Sitaram’s house in Anjuna. 100 people. I played at sunset. I was playing using two Minidisc players haha!  Very cool party… I danced for like 4 hours while others were playing, then played my set, and then danced another 5 hours afterwards while the rest of them played.

The next party I played at was in Upstate New York, in college,  for a Drag-party with around 500 people where I was dressed up as a woman (Military-Bitch)! All the guys were dressed as girls and all the girls dressed as guys. Full on costume party. It was the first time that Psytrance was being played in college.. Wild scene. The first party that I played properly with CDJs etc, was in NYC, Brooklyn it was a party that two of my Japanese friends and I had organized under our party-label, “Sound Species”. I played the opening set for Penta.  It was our first official party 🙂

How has living all around the world; Denmark, New York, and around India influence your musical  journey?

Well I was in Denmark from the age of 1 to 5, so other than nursery rhymes I dont know what musical qualities I got from that place (other than northern lights and loooong dark winters hehe).  But yea international boarding school, college and work in NY, work in London, spending lots of time in Amsterdam, going to Goa every year since I was 7, having very open minded and strong charactered parents, and me involved in the party scenes all the way through this, have definitely opened my ears.  Electronic dance music takes the repetitive rhythms of ancient shaman vision and pushes them through time.

What would you call your style of music?

Honestly I don’t have a style. Situation is my style:-p. I love mysterious twilight, clean dark, and strong Psychedelic Morning sounds. But if I had to put one word to it, it would be: Forward-MovingDrivingIntelligentMysticalDanceBlasterMusic. Haha one word.

How has the music scene in India grown since the time you have been playing?

Well it’s a bit of a roller-coaster ride.  Ups & downs all happening at the same time.  For the Psy scene a lot of the best parties and scenes (that happened after Psy started to spread out of Goa into other places in India), were from around 1994 to 2000. Goa scene was blasting, lots of good outdoor parties around Bombay. In the cities the scene has gone more indoor now, and Goa as we know has changed a lot. The real parties rarely happen anymore. Things are always changing though so it’s better not to get too caught up in the past, gotta keep pushing :). These days it’s also good.  The number of  great Indian DJs, the number of great international artists that are always passing through and playing in Goa and cities all over India. There have been lots of banging Psy gigs in clubs over the last few years, specially in Bombay :). There are a lot of healthy things happening, I just wish we had a easier environment to work in: stupid laws, weird social stigmas, unprofessionalism, and generally the Indian authorities making it hard to sustain a good party environment, instead of accepting it and supporting it, is something that can be frustrating. People will always find a way to have a good scene though. Look at Universal Religion, we have to go to Nepal to do it, but music knows no borders it will find a way, and hats off to the organizers and everyone involved.

What musical items can we always find in your backpack?

Pen-drive 🙂  Never leave home without it, it’s on my key-chain actually.

Tell us about your long standing association with Universal Religion.

I played for the last three and am running back with a smile on my face for the fourth.  It’s put together by an amazing group of people. I love the way that it’s a partnership festival.  All the good organizers and promoters from Nepal partnering with Indian organizers and promoters to put together a very special festival. It’s the only proper Psychedelic festival in the Indian Subcontinent right now if you ask me. Going there every year is more than just going to a festival, it’s a family reunion.

What tip would you give a first timer who is coming to the festival?

“Dancers are god’s athletes”  – Albert Einstein.

What can we expect at Universal Religion this year from your set!

I don’t know 🙂

Any production plans for this year?

Well I’ve made one track in one year, so hopefully I will make two next year haha.  I’m still figuring it out, learning.
I need to tie my-self down to really get into it. I have a music production studio in Goa that other people are using, if only i had enough time to be there more and use it myself 🙂  Programming all the DJs for Blue Frog in Bombay and Delhi is a full on situation. Hectic. I love it, but it doesn’t leave me much time to get into production seriously, though the exposure keeps growing so I hope to channel it properly one day.

One international festival you would want to play at in the future?

Tree of Life 🙂

Which other Djs would you consider your influences?

I don’t know who he was and I don’t remember his name,  it was 1995 in Goa. This guy was playing the trees and the waves and the wind man.

There was another party at Paradiso in Goa, 36 hour party… around 1996,  where York (Shiva Jorg),  played a miiind blowing set.  At one point this Military helicopter swooped around the hill, approached us from the ocean, and came eye-to-eye with the dance floor and just hovered there (cuz we were at the edge of a cliff, 2000 people). There was a huge machine gun on a stand bolted to the heli-deck with three military guys with shiny aviators glaring at us… everyone held their breath. York cut the sound with an effect and then all we could hear was the rotors of the helicopter, then York started a fresh track, the track’s intro sounded like a weird robot helicopter! The sound of reality and the sound of the music merged into one and when the beat finally dropped the crowd LOOOOST IT!  The Military guys were loving it too, laughing watching all of us maniacs going mad. The helicopter pulled up and away. Oooooof.
